[CALCULATE SCORE AND RECOMMENDATION]
Result | Interpretation |
Less than 10 | You are most likely getting enough sleep. However, if you have noticed a change in your normal sleep routine, you are recommended to discuss this with your doctor. |
10 – 16 | You may be suffering from excessive daytime sleepiness. You should discuss this with your doctor to determine the cause of your sleepiness and possible treatment. Your doctor may refer you for a home-based sleep study to assist in your diagnosis. |
16+ | It is imperative that you discuss this with your doctor to determine the cause of your sleepiness and to investigate treatment as soon as possible. Your doctor can refer you for a home-based sleep study to assist in your diagnosis. |
This scale should not be used to make your own diagnosis. It is intended as a tool to help you identify your own level of daytime sleepiness, which can often be a symptom of many sleep disorders.
If your score is 10 or more, please discuss the results with your doctor to help in your diagnosis and treatment.
Please note: True excessive daytime sleepiness is almost always caused by an underlying medical condition that can be easily diagnosed and effectively treated.
- Home Sleep Study
What is a Home Sleep Study?
A Home Sleep Study (HSS) records your physiological data and other parameters similar to that of a laboratory sleep study however you sleep in the comfort of your own home.
Why do I need this study?
Our non-invasive study will find whether you have any type of Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) that could be chronically affecting your health. By reviewing your sleep physiology recorded on our sleep-monitoring device, a thorough understanding of your sleep is developed. This allows our Sleep Specialist to diagnose any sleep disorders including Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) and develop a tailored patient care plan that provides you with ongoing treatment, management and support. Your referring doctor or specialist will assess your suitability for a HSS based on your identified symptoms and other medical conditions.
Benefits of using a Home Sleep Study?
- Comfortability and relaxation from sleeping in your own bed.
- Advantageous to the home-bound, elderly, or those with chronic illness who find leaving the home difficult.
- Only a fraction of the cost of an in-lab sleep study.
- Easier and faster testing that leads to improve patient health outcomes much quicker.
What is involved in a Home Sleep Study?
An appointment will be made with our Sleep Technician at one of our Medsleep Centres. Our Sleep Technician will provide you with information on Sleep disorders such as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) along instructions and a demonstration of how to set up the sleep-monitoring device before taking it home.
The device is worn overnight to monitor your sleeping patterns, body movement, snoring, eye movements, oxygen levels, heart rhythm and rate. You will then need to return the sleep monitoring device to the Centre the morning after to have your data downloaded and your results assessed.
What do I need at the time of the appointment?
- Your doctor or specialist referral.
- Your Medicare Card and any benefit cards (eg. OVA, Healthcare).
- A list of medications that you are currently taking.
- A brief knowledge of your medical history.
How do I prepare for my Home Sleep Study?
On the night of the study, try to follow your regular routine as much as possible. If you are on a regular medication, speak with your doctor as to whether you may have to temporarily discontinue using the medication. Avoid napping and try to eliminate or limit the intake of caffeine. The only real difference is that you will be sleeping with a sleep-monitoring device, which you will be applying on your body 30-45 minutes before your bedtime. You will place the sensors on your body as instructed at your appointment.
The most important factor in getting accurate results is good skin preparation to facilitate contact between the sensors and your skin. Beforehand, please shower, remove any makeup or nail polish and wash your hair. Do not apply any moisturisers or oils to your skin.
When you wake up the next day, remove all the sensors and discard the electrodes as well as the nasal cannula. Then, return the machine to your Medsleep Centre at the agreed time.
How will I get the results?
Your referring doctor or specialist will then be sent a copy of the test results to go over with you as soon as they are available. If your doctor or specialist is happy for the Medsleep Sleep Specialist to discuss the results directly with you, then they will contact you to make an appointment.
What comes after discussing the results?
If the test comes back with a diagnosis of OSA, we will follow the Sleep Specialist’s recommendation and develop a tailored care plan. The most common and effective treatment for OSA is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy. CPAP therapy works by blowing air at a certain pressure through your partially obstructed airway in order to eliminate the obstruction and to allow you to breathe normally. If this is deemed appropriate for you, Medsleep offers the latest range of masks and machines for trial and sale. Medsleep can help you with all your needs and perform regular service on your sleep apnoea equipment.
